The Finest Family in the Whole Bloomin' Land

This is a sponsored review from BlogHer and Slim·Fast.
My parents’ wedding was the year my Dad’s family held their first family reunion. Lore has it that my aunt said, “If we ever want to see each other again, we have to plan for it.” I suppose that sounds rather melodramatic, but with my dad’s marriage (he’s the youngest of four), the siblings would now be spread out in Utah, Washington state, New England, and Wisconsin. They actually might never see each other.

And so they decided on a bi-annual reunion, in which their parents, the four siblings, their spouses and their children, would gather. Responsibility for procuring a location and assigning food and activities would rotate among the spouses. Everyone would be expected to attend.

Every other summer, for my entire life, we’ve gone. Except for one summer where many of the grandchildren couldn’t attend for one reason or another, nearly every person has attended every year.

This July will be the 15th reunion.

We’ve done all sorts of things over the years – water sports, mask making, cooking, endless rounds of cards. Two activities, however, are staples.

First, a videotaped reenactment of a scripture story. In the early days, this was a very basic bathrobe and towel affair with an aunt or uncle narrating straight from the Bible. Today, the grandchildren have taken it over and it has become so full of stunts, special effects, and jokes that you wouldn’t recognize Moses if he smacked you in the head with a basket made of reeds. Two years ago, we watched some of the old ones, and I could almost not breathe for laughing. I have no idea what story we’ll be basing our fine film on this summer, but I assure you, you will not know it from Adam.

And then there is the night of music. My grandparents are both amazingly musical (many of the descendents. . . not so much). Usually there is a theme chosen and then a whole host of musical numbers, generally accompanied by dance routines and costumes, are performed by every possible combination of family members.

In 2009, my family donned berets and false mustaches and did a rousing rendition of “Those Canaan Days” from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. What we lacked in talent (and there was an astonishing dearth), we made up for in enthusiasm and ridiculous French accents.

This reunion will take place a week before my youngest sister’s wedding and one can only imagine the eyebrow raising that her poor fiance will do when he sees what an utterly insane family he is about to marry into.

And all wedding preparation had better be done before the reunion so that we have plenty of time to practice dance moves and perfect our Biblical costumes. We have our priorities.

If you'd like a chance to win a Slim-Fast gift pack (worth $100), tell me about your family reunions. Do you have them? If so, what kinds of traditions do you have?

The last time my family had a reunion, my great-aunt didn't bother to say "hello" and instead reached out to squeeze my boobs before saying with an eye-roll, "You ARE breastfeeding your little one, RIGHT?" Heh. Thankfully that side of the family lives far, far away. My OTHER side of the family lives closer where we have some terrific holiday dinner traditions that don't involve fondling anyone's chest. I haven't really been to a family reunion since my grandma past, but we have informal gatherings for holidays and during the summers and birthdays where we cook a big dinner or someone cooks on the grill

We had a family reunion which was heartwarming and wonderful. I saw cousins whom I hadn't seen in so many years and they were so welcoming, warm and lovely. What an unforgettable and special time we all had. saubleb(at)gmail(dot)com

My family (my parents and siblings and their spouses and children--now numbering 27 in all) get together once a year for a weekend and we all stay together in a big cabin up in the mountains of Southern Utah. We have a great time doing skits and talents, playing games, and eating. Since we all have to share just a couple of bathrooms it is true family bonding!

We don't have an actual family reunion, but we do all try to get together at Christmas. Our traditions are to have our favorite foods and exchange gifts. We also share and take pictures. LPoser1 [at] gmail [dot] com

Ours isn't a technical "reunion"... but my whole family (on my mom's side) goes to an annual county fair where we stay in a 2-story cabin for a week... we play cards, eat way too much food (coming up with the year's best recipe is a big challenge!), and bond with cousins. It is my favorite week of the year!

My side of the family doesn't do reunions, but I sure wish we did! My husband's family, however, used to do reunions like the ones you describe with the whole family every other year. I've seen videos of their skit night and it's hilarious. Last year we started doing family reunions for the new generation with my in-laws as the grandparents and then all his siblings and the grandchildren. With 12 adults (if I'm counting correctly) and 12 children all under the age of 10 it was quite the event! A little long, a little uncomfortable at times, but lots and lots of fun. We are all spread out throughout CA, AZ, UT, CO, MA, and D.C. so they want to do it every other year since we probably won't see each other otherwise.

Our last reunion was years ago at a hotel in Atlanta. The cleaning staff had sprayed the walls and ceiling of the partially-enclosed pool area with a mildew-killing cleaner containing bleach; Almost every member of the family had clothing damaged before we and the hotel staff figured out what was going on.

Ah, family reunions. Growing up we drove every year out from Ohio to Utah to then head up with my Dad's side of the family to Yellowstone for a week. I loved those reunions. We fished, we hiked, we explored and we had so much fun. Those are some of my best memories. We tried to replicate it a few years back, but so many people skipped out it wasn't the same. I hope we can start the tradition again with this next generation.

My family used to have awesome reunions at my great grand parents' level. They usually involved camping, horse shoes, singing, and hiking. Nowadays we don't seem to have much going on at that level. Which is fine because between my immediate family and in-laws, there's plenty of family reunions to keep us busy.

My mom's family has them. I have only gone once, last year. It was fun getting to know everyone since they do not live nearby. I hope to be able to attend again this year.

It's been years since we've had a family reunion, but usually we get together with our distant relatives every few years, for weddings and such. We don't have any special traditions, other than everyone getting together and talking about their childhoods.
Thanks so much.

buzzd said...

We don't have them when we do get together we usually cook together and talk

We use to have reunion every year but now those older ones have passed on or moved away. The next generation seems too busy to get to gether.

My family all lives very close to one another, so big planning is not required. Hubby's fam tho is HUGE...2 generations ago, 3 siblings married 2 sibs and a 1st cousin. They gather every other year on the 4th of July weekend. A good time is had by all!

We've never had any kind of structured reunions and I confess the idea makes me cringe. I'm sure someday I'll have to eat my words when my extended family wants to have one, but for now I will continue to think they are deplorably cheesy. Really can't family get together without all the obnoxious skits and other such nonsense?

KaHolly said...

We don't have family reunions, and I think it's such a shame.

My husband's family always does them. It's really fun because they do a raffle of sorts. Last year I had to work so he still went and all the prizes he chose were for our baby! She now has toys to grow into! :)

We no longer have them, my grandma passed away 5 years ago and she was the reason that we did before. I think its a shame that families don't do this as often as when I was young. Society has mad us to busy to enjoy the little things.
